Description

The location problem has traditionally been considered as one that locates an infinitesimally sized facility. In many applications (such as plant layout) this is not a reasonable assumption. Considering facilities to be of finite size requires a fundamental departure from the traditional approaches used in location analysis. For instance, it requires the problem of placement (location and orientation) to be considered. The analysis that is needed is intricate and makes a fundamental contribution to the field of location analysis. Furthermore, the accurate measurement of distance due to the consideration of finite size in the facility being placed makes a fundamental contribution to the field of plant layout. Finally, through this approach the two fields of location and layout (which have been treated separately by researchers) are brought closer together. It is entirely possible that the resultant papers will spur a significant amount of further work by researchers in these areas.
