INTRODUCTION
This module introduces students to the investigation
of the generation of sound. The design of a musical
instrument is the context for student learning. Students
will investigate a variety of concepts which include:
- Exploring of the characteristics of sound waves.
- Studying how sounds are generated with strings
and columns of air.
- Learning to analyze sound with computer software.
- Designing, optimizing and building a musical
instrument.
- Engineering a musical recording with the designed
instrument.
- Writing the musical recording onto a compact
disk.

GRADE
LEVEL
This module is appropriate for use in grades 11-12.
Students should have a minimum of two years each of
Regents mathematics and science. The prior competencies
in mathematics and science are desirable since students
need to collect and analyze data to develop their
design solutions.
TIME
ALLOCATION
A minimum of 25 class sessions are needed to complete
this module. Since this is an open ended design challenge
in which there is no single correct design solution,
students may require more than the allotted time.
The 25 class sessions should be considered a minimum
time requirement.
