Offered business consulting services to assist clients in achieving strategic differentiation and operational excellence. Registered GEMS Consultant. Recent clients include AccuMed Technologies, Buffalo, New York; ECR International, Utica, New York; Harper International, Lancaster, New York; Dresser-Rand, Olean, New York; O’Mara Consulting Engineers, Amherst, New York; Great American Insurance, New York, New York; BOC Edwards Pharmaceutical Systems, Tonawanda, New York, and others.
Manager, Business Development , Praxair Inc., Tonawanda, New York (1995 – 1998).
Created business plans, conducted marketing studies, organized business teams and developed selected industrial gases businesses in China and Taiwan. Applied intelligent technologies to enhance business proposals, plant operations, and knowledge management. Solved high-speed machinery problems in plants. Designed novel dual-level high-efficiency cryogenic turbines to create competitive advantages. Managed various technology application projects. Coordinated with universities (e.g., MIT and University of Virginia) to develop specific new technologies. Invented technologies to remove sub-micron particulates in gas streams. Managed groups of engineers.
Others.
Conducted market studies in Kaoshuing, Taiwan and identified new business opportunities. Authored team presentation package and made presentation to recommend a specific market entry strategy to maximize short-term cash flow, to minimize capital investment, and to build a strong long-term position in Taiwan. The business plan was accepted as a road map by Praxair to create and expand industrial gases business in Taiwan.
Performed a four-month market study and drafted a business plan to turnaround Praxair's cylinder gases business in Beijing, China. Created an action plan to consolidate producers, to control independent distributors, and to improve after-sale services to customers. This resulted in an increase of the market share of Praxair’s joint venture from 30% in 1995 to about 50% in 1997, and the market share continued to improve thereafter.
Directed a Chinese consulting firm in Beijing to perform a cylinder gases market study in South China. Evaluated new business opportunities and co-developed an entry strategy for Praxair in Guangdong province. Subsequently, Praxair created a joint venture with Shaoquan Iron and Steel in Guangdong province in 1998.
Completed a China-wide market study of high purity oxygen and hydrogen gases. Recommended a delay of market entry due to the small market size, complex distribution networks and geographically diverse customer base of business.
Performed a China-wide market study on Prostar gas apparatus products, identified key opportunities, and wrote a business plan to create new welding/cutting hardgoods business in China. This plan, which includes strategies of sourcing specific components locally and building assembly plants in China, has been on hold due to the current economic conditions in China.
Organized and successfully implemented a product show for Prostar gas apparatus in Shanghai, China. Identified key success factors in marketing high-quality gas apparatus products in China and generated a large number of industrial gases business leads for Praxair China.
Participated in a new Strategic Marketing Process Team to evaluate customer value chains, perform SWOT studies, segment cylinder gases markets, and recommend steps to implement strategies. Presented a risk-based analysis, which illustrated the impact of the proposed program initiatives on cash flow and Net Present Value. Subsequently, Praxair selected cylinder gases as one of its six major markets to pursue in 1998 – 2001.
Strategic Business Analyst, Praxair, Tonawanda, New York (1994 – 1995).
Spearheaded the development of risk analysis skills at Praxair. Modeled capital budget process using probabilistic inputs and produced the internal rate of return as distribution functions. Created a risk-based pricing model, which allowed Praxair to better satisfy customers’ needs, while meeting the required hurtle rates. Initiated the risk-based project cost analysis with improved project contingency and risk factors, which were the root causes for project cost overrun. Risk analysis has since been accepted as a candidate technology capable of creating competitive advantages for Praxair.
Designed the expert systems software tool "Pipeline Nitrogen Advisor" for achieving improved efficiency, quality and customer value in preparing sales proposals for pipeline gases. Applied several AI tools such as Neural Networks, Case-Based Reasoning and Belief Networks for solving operations problems.
Senior Development Associate; Development Associate; Supervisor; Consultant; Senior Engineer; and Staff Engineer, Praxair Inc., Tonawanda, New York (1973 - 1994).
Responsible for developing novel equipment and technology systems, as well as new technologies in support of plant operations. Managed the performance and development of staff.
Invented a new knowledge presentation methodology and developed the "N-Plant Advisor" and "Membrane Plant Advisor" expert systems tools to preserve corporate expertise in plant operations and to facilitate the utilization of preserved knowledge. Praxair distributed these software tools for use by plant technicians globally. Awarded one (1) US patent. Received a Praxair Special Recognition Award for Technology Leadership.
Created a novel dual-level bearing design for Praxair’s cryogenic turbine, which tested out successfully at the very first startup attempt. This bearing design was subsequently selected for use in over 150 cryogenic turbines built by Praxair. Since that time, cryogenic turbines have become one of the core technologies of Praxair and Praxair acquired an unquestionable world leadership position. Awarded one (1) US patent.
Advanced the analytical skills in rotor dynamics. Resolved selected vibration problems of many vendor-supplied turbines and compressors using these skills. Designed the so-called "Chang Bearing" widely known within Praxair production department and eliminated the recurring vibration problem of vendor-supplied compressors. These efforts resulted in improved operational reliability of major equipment and a significant reduction of operations costs.
Initiated the development of a gas-phase particle removal technology. Directed the super filter system development effort (small spacing theory). Conducted a product testing program and identified the success factors for its commercialization.
Developed the high intensity ionizer systems in support of company’s business initiative in the environmental market. Efforts were focused on achieving capital cost reduction to facilitate commercialization. Awarded three (3) US patents. Managed a team of ten (10) R&D engineers to develop new technologies in support of business.
