Biographical Sketch

Dr. Jun Zhuang is the Morton C. Frank Professor and serves as the Director of Graduate Studies and the Director of the Decision, Risk & Data Laboratory in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) at the University at Buffalo (UB), which is part of the State University of New York (SUNY). Dr. Zhuang obtained his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2008. His primary research objective is to integrate operations research, big data analytics, game theory, and decision analysis to enhance mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery in the face of natural and man-made disasters. Additionally, he explores other domains such as healthcare, sports, transportation, supply chain management, sustainability, and architecture. Dr. Zhuang has acted as a principal investigator for more than 30 research grants funded by various organizations, including the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

Dr. Zhuang has received numerous leadership and research awards, including the 2024 Fellow Award from the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE), the 2022 Fellow Award from Distinguished Educator Award from the Society for Risk Analysis (SRA), the 2020-2021 SUNY Chancellor's Awards for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities, the 2021-2023 Buffalo Blue Sky Bronze Coin Holder Award, the 2019 SRA's Chauncey Starr Distinguished Young Risk Analyst Award, the UB's 2019 Exceptional Scholar Award for Sustained Achievement, the 2018 SEAS' Senior Researcher of the Year Award, the 2018-2020 Buffalo Blue Sky Gold Coin Award, the 2018 Volunteer Service Award from INFORMS, the 2017 Koopman Prize from the INFORMS' Military Applications Society, the 2014 Military Operations Research Journal Award, and the 2013 UB's Exceptional Scholar--Young Investigator Award. Additionally, Dr. Zhuang is a fellow of the 2011 U.S. Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowship Program sponsored by the AFOSR and a fellow of the 2009-2010 Next Generation of Hazards and Disasters Researchers Program sponsored by the NSF.

Dr. Zhuang has published over 140 peer-reviewed journal articles in esteemed publications such as Operations Research, IISE Transactions, Risk Analysis, Decision Analysis, and the European Journal of Operational Research, among others. His research and educational endeavors have garnered attention from renowned sources including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Spark CBC Radio, Metro, The Washington Post, USA Today, Stanford GSB News, NSF Discovery, Science Daily, Industrial Engineer, The Council on Undergraduate Research Quarterly, and The Pre-Engineering Times, among others. Dr. Zhuang serves on the editorial boards of Risk Analysis and Decision Analysis, previously co-edited Decision Analysis Today, and has extensively reviewed proposals for esteemed institutions like NSF, ASEE, DOD, NASA, European Research Council, Japan Science and Technology Agency, The U.S.-Israel Binational Science Foundation, Ministry of Science and Technology of Israel, Foundation for Polish Science, Dutch National Science Foundation, and National Science Centre-Poland. Furthermore, he has served as a reviewer for over 100 academic journals and conferences, contributing more than 600 reviews. Dr. Zhuang's professional and community service have been acknowledged through various accolades, including the 2023 Volunteer Service Award from the Institute for Operations Research and Management Science (INFORMS), the 2023 INFORMS Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Ambassador award, the 2022 INFORMS DEI Ambassador award, 2019 40 Under 40 Award from Buffalo Business First, the 2018 Volunteer Service Award from INFORMS, the 2017 Best Reviewer Award from Risk Analysis, Society for Risk Analysis, and the 2012 Outstanding Reviewer Award from the Journal of Infrastructure Systems, American Society of Civil Engineers.

Dr. Zhuang exhibits unwavering commitment to teaching and mentoring both undergraduate and graduate students. His exceptional dedication in these areas has earned him several prestigious accolades, including the 2023 Distinguished Educator Award from Society for Risk Analysis (SRA), the 2020 UB Teaching Innovation Award, the 2019-20 UB Excellence in Graduate Student Mentoring Award, the 2019 UB SEAS Best Senior Teacher of the Year Award, the 2019 UB Student Engagement's Exemplary Faculty/Staff Mentor Award, the 2012 UB President Emeritus and Mrs. Martin Meyerson Award for Distinguished Teaching and Mentoring, and the 2008 Graduate Student Mentor Award from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. Zhuang served as the chair for the Second Conference on Risk Analysis, Decision Analysis, and Security: Risk Analysis in the Digital Era, which took place in Buffalo/Niagara Falls, NY from July 30 to August 2, 2019. Additionally, he co-chaired the International Conference on Risk Analysis, Decision Analysis and Security held at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China from July 21 to July 23, 2017. Dr. Zhuang also played a pivotal role as co-chair for the first and second Conference on Validating Models of Adversary Behavior, which were held in Buffalo/Niagara Falls, NY on June 23-26, 2013, and August 2-5, 2015, respectively.

Dr. Zhuang has been happily married to his wife, Jie, since 2003, and together they have three wonderful children: Emily, Ethan, and Elijah. They also share their home with a dog named Yogurt (2020) and two cats named Mimi (2020) and Meeco (2022). Six of us (2021).
