Hundreds of students from Western New York middle schools compete in "Math is Everywhere," a math-based contest initiated to raise student awareness about the many applications of math to their every-day lives.

This event is sponsored by Erie 1 BOCES and Erie 2 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES and cosponsored by Cavan, Dudzinski and Associates, Inc. It is done in cooperation with UB's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and UB's Gifted Math Program. The event is held on UB's Amherst Campus.

The contest is divided into three areas of competition:

  1. Individual Test - Students solve written math problems individually.
    Sample Individual Questions - sixth grade
    Sample Individual Questions - seventh grade
    Sample Individual Questions - eighth grade
  2. Team Test - Students solve written math problems in teams.Sample Team Questions
  3. Presentation - Students are presented with situational problems prior to the days of the contest and utilize math, working in teams, to derive creative solutions to the given problems. Results are then presented on the days of the contest
