- Project Title: • Diverting Stormwater and Salt Deposits from Low Points of Bridge Corners and/or Fascias.
- Project Background
Since all bridges have at least one low spot to where stromwater and salt deposits drain it would be appropriate to review the methods of handling the waters and debris that discharges along and abutments below leaking joints and fascias can be damaged similarly over their entire bridge joints and fascias. Salt and or salt water damages the bearings, girder ends. pedestals and abutment faces below. With better stromwater discharge systems more of the harmful elements can be diverted away from critical structural components and reduce fascias that are subject to cracking, spalling and eventually breaking off.
Study a group of bridges in the local area and observe how the stormwater discharge affects various points of the bridge structure. After making observations of effective and ineffective designs make recommendation(s) on potential solutions. Objective would focus on how to best divert stormwater discharges away from bridges so as not to cause damage to the bridge sub and/or superstructure.
- Expected Deliverables
A report to show existing conditions of bridges that have been damaged by ineffective stormwater discharge. Review both good and poor examples of stormwater discharge. Make recommendations on how to improve drainage patterns on existing or new bridges being constructed.

A two semester time table to be able to study existing bridges in various weather conditions. The winters are normally severe in the UB area and plenty of salt is used to control ice. The biggest damage to the bridges is caused by the salt and melted sa

Review of existing conditions on bridges where stormwater discharge has caused problems. Analyze the conditions found to segregate good concepts from poor ones. Develop designs to improve stormwater discharge on existing and newly constructed bridges.
