Admission to a SEAS Minor or Certificate

The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences currently offers minors in various subjects. These provide a nice means to complement a major degree program.

UB students in academic good standing may be considered for admission to our minor programs.

Students who have acted in a manner that is inconsistent with the SEAS Code of Professional Conduct may be denied admission to the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

Minor in Computer Science

Admission to the computer science minor requires:

  1. Matriculated student with academic good standing at the University at Buffalo.
  2. Submission of the SEAS Major/Minor Change Application.
  3. Completion of three required core courses with grades of C– or better and a combined core course grade point average of at least 2.5. The three required core courses are:
    • Introduction to Computer Science Majors 1 (CSE 115)
    • Introduction to Computer Science Majors 2 (CSE 116)
    • Discrete Structures (CSE 191 or MTH 191) 
      Note: students who have taken MTH 311 can use that as a substitute for CSE 191 / MTH 191.
  4. Minimum overall cumulative GPA of 2.8.

Minor in Cybersecurity

Admission to the cybersecurity minor requires:

  1. One of the following:
    1. Academic good standing within an approved major within the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
    2. Academic good standing within an approved major within the School of Management.
    3. Satisfaction of the core course requirement for admission to the computer science major or an engineering major. See our Admission to SEAS for Current UB Students documentation for more information.
  2. Submission of the SEAS Major/Minor Change Application by November 15 for Spring admission. Students who apply after this deadline will be considered on a space-available basis. Note that applications are reviewed once per year. Students should submit an application during the fall semester to be considered for admission to the program the subsequent spring semester.
  3. Completion of a total of 45 credit hours (at UB or elsewhere). Note that students may apply to the program while registered in courses that will bring them to 45 total credit hours.
  4. Minimum overall and UB cumulative GPAs of 2.5.

Admission to the electrical engineering minor requires:

  1. One of the following:
    1. Academic good standing within an approved major within the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
    2. Satisfaction of the core course requirement for admission to an engineering major. See our Admission to SEAS for Current UB Students documentation for more information.
  2. Submission of the SEAS Major/Minor Change Application.
  3. Completion of five required core courses with a combined core course grade point average of at least 2.5. The required core courses are:
    • Calculus 1 (MTH 141)
    • Calculus 2 (MTH 142)
    • General Physics 1 (PHY 107)
    • General Physics 2 (PHY 108)
    • General Physics 2 lab (PHY 158)
  4. Minimum overall cumulative GPA of 2.5.

Minor in Manufacturing

Admission to the manufacturing minor requires:

  1. One of the following:
    1. Academic good standing within an approved major within the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
    2. Satisfaction of the core course requirement for admission to an engineering major. See our Admission to SEAS for Current UB Students documentation for more information.
  2. Submission of the SEAS Major/Minor Change Application by November 15 for Spring admission and by March 15 for Fall admission. Students who apply after this deadline will be considered on a space-available basis.
  3. Completion of a total of 45 credit hours (at UB or elsewhere). Note that students may apply to the program while registered in courses that will bring them to 45 total credit hours.
  4. Minimum overall and UB cumulative GPAs of 2.5. Admission will be limited to 25 students per year, and therefore the GPAs of admitted students may be higher. When demand exceeds capacity, the overall academic history of applicants will be considered in admission decisions.

Minor in Robotics

Admission to the robotics minor requires:

  1. One of the following:
    1. Academic good standing within an approved major within the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

  2. Submission of the SEAS Major/Minor Change Application by November 15 for Spring admission and by March 15 for Fall admission. Students who apply after these deadlines will be considered on a space-available basis.
  3. Completion of a total of 45 credit hours (at UB or elsewhere). Note that students may apply to the program while registered in courses that will bring them to 45 total credit hours.

Minors in Human Factors and Ergonomics Engineering, Operations Research, and Quality Engineering

Admission to one of these minors requires:

  1. Academic good standing within an approved major at the University at Buffalo.
    Note: Students who left the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences in poor academic standing are not eligible to apply for this minor until they have completed 30 credits in a new (non-SEAS) major.
  2. Submission of the SEAS Major/Minor Change Application by November 15 for Spring admission and by March 15 for Fall admission. Students who apply after this deadline will be considered on a space-available basis.
  3. Completion of a total of 45 credit hours (at UB or elsewhere). Note that students may apply to the program while registered in courses that will bring them to 45 total credit hours.
  4. Minimum overall and UB cumulative GPAs of 2.5. Admission will be limited to 25 students per year, and therefore the GPAs of admitted students may be higher. When demand exceeds capacity, the overall academic history of applicants will be considered in admission decisions.

Certificate in Data Intensive Computing

Admission to the certificate requires:

  1. Completion of the two prerequisites:
    • CSE 115 Introduction to Computer Science I
    • CSE 116 Introduction to Computer Science II
  2. Prerequisite course GPA: 2.5
  3. Submission of the SEAS Major/Minor Change Application

The Major/Minor Change Application opens around the seventh week of the fall/spring semester and closes at the end of the drop/add period. This opening date provides adequate time for students to add a minor before the registration period opens.
