Personal Home Page

Welcome to my personal home page.  Below, you will find a brief bio and some links that I have found useful.  For less personal, more professional information, try the buttons to your left.

Bio:

I was raised in rural Indiana near the town of Goshen, where I attended Fairfield High School.  After graduation, I went to Rice University in Houston, TX, where I spent four years studying chemical engineering.  While there, I was a member of Brown College and the Marching Owl Band (MOB).  While at Rice, I spent two summers working as a summer intern at Exxon Chemical Company in Baytown, TX.  In the fall of 1992 I began graduate school in the department of chemical engineering and materials science at the University of Minnesota.  My thesis advisor was Bob Carr, and the topic was gas phase chemical kinetics and the detailed modeling of chemical vapor deposition processes.

In January of 1994, I married Wendy Good, whom I had known for many years, and we have been happily married ever since.

After finishing my PhD in July of 1997, I spent one year doing post-doctoral research in the mechanical engineering department at the University of Minnesota.   There, I worked with Steven Girshick, Peter McMurry, and Stephen Campbell.  We studied the nucleation of hydrogenated silicon particles during silicon CVD from silane, and radiofrequency thermal plasma CVD of textured diamond films.

In the fall of 1998, Wendy and I moved to the Buffalo, NY area, and I joined the department of chemical engineering (now Chemical and Biological Engineering) at the University at Buffalo (SUNY).  If you came to this page from my more official university page, then you probably already know all about that.  If not, try some of the other buttons at the upper left, or to to my departmental web page at http://www.cbe.buffalo.edu/swihart.

While we were in Minneapolis, Wendy and I were active members of Faith Mennonite Church.  To find out more about Mennonites, take a look at the Mennonite Information Center.  We are now active members of Amherst Community Church, which is affiliated with the United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
