TRANSMISSION OF
WAVELET-CODED IMAGES OVER UNRELIABLE CHANNELS
During the past decade the wavelet transform was
established as the most efficient tool for image compression. In this
presentation, we will briefly review the two most popular trends in wavelet
image compression (tree-based and block-based) and then we will discuss transmission
aspects using several wavelet coding paradigms. Two main transmission scenarios
will be presented: transmission over memoryless noisy
channels and wireless channels. For each transmission scenario, we will examine
the suitability of widely-used channel codes such as RCPC codes and
Turbo-codes. Efficient channel coding optimization strategies will be proposed
and evaluated using data collected from experiments.
