National Championship!

We are proud to announce that we have won the Small Size League of the RoboCup American Open 2004!
This year's competition took place in New Orleans. It certainly was a great experience and a lot of fun. It took us two days to drive down there...

You should definetly go and take a look at some competition pictures.

We have all three robots working!

    March 2004
A lot has happened this month. We've moved into a much bigger temporary labspace and got two brand new 3CCD Panasonic Cams. Furthermore, we've completed the second robot and are only missing a few parts for the third one. We've upscaled the field and it's close to the original 2004 size. On the software side we've also gotten plenty of things done, such as interfacing the referee box and assigning toplevel intelligence patterns.
Earlier we've also given another quick demonstration at the Buffalo Library.

    February 2004
Mainly building more robots and programming new behaviors.
Besides that we built a wooden frame for holding up the camera and additional lightning.

    Buffalo Museum of Science:
We gave a first public demonstration of RoboCup at the Buffalo Museum of Science.

  • Goalie and kick back behavior (.mpg 10MB)

    January 2004
The first robot has been essentially completed. It is now able to dribble the ball and kick at various speeds. The next step will be to optimize the dribbler mechanism in order to achieve a maximum grip of the ball.
On the software side, first attempts in intelligent path planning algorithms are being made. The system will use a potential fields model combined with an optimized tree search.
Furthermore, we've addded a second computer to the system which carries the image processing software. It's a brandnew 3GhZ Pentium 4 running Gentoo Linux with SMP support (via HyperThreading). This allows us to run a 640x480 resolution with 30fps at less than 40% CPU.

    Videos:

  • Demonstration of the kicker (.mpg 2MB)
  • Demonstration of an early goalie behavior (.mpg 8MB)
  • Demonstration of the preliminary path planning model (.mpg 8MB)

Basic Behaviors have been implemented (simple Goalie + Follow Ball).
The transmission and motor-driver are fully working. The kicker is about to be implemented.

The first robot is coming along quite well.
The image-processing system, the game's knowledge-base and the visualizer are almost fully implemented.

    October 2003
We started manufacturing the first prototype robot.
We bought a camera (digital firewire - 1CCD for now) and started working on the image processing. Since we don't have any complete robots we simply attached the green carpet onto the wall and made some paper-bots.
