UB Center for Advanced Technology in Biomedical and Bioengineering

PRINT VERSION

The UB Center for Advanced Technology (CAT) in Biomedical and Bioengineering supports university-industry collaboration in research, education and technology transfer, with a strong focus on helping New York State-based businesses gain a technological edge on their competition. Operating under the auspices of the New York State Office of Science, Technology and Academic Research (NYSTAR), CAT is fueling continued growth in some of the most promising technologies of tomorrow and in some of the most important sectors of the state's economy.

UB CAT—one of fifteen such centers located across the state—focuses on biomedical and bioengineering research that can lead to development of useful products with commercial potential. By accelerating science and technology transfer, UB CAT fosters the creation of new biotech start-up companies and helps existing biomedical businesses expand through new or improved product lines.

Area of Focus

UB CAT will consider for funding biomedical or bioengineering devices with application in the medical field that can enhance the clinical care of patients or aid in the training of medical personnel.

Project Funding

There are two types of awards granted by CAT to assist the transfer of technology from the lab to the marketplace:

  1. Discovery Awards - given to projects that are currently in the research stage in order to transform promising ideas into prototypes.

  2. Science Transfer Awards - granted to projects in late-stage development that require additional testing before they can be commercialized.

Funding—up to $150,000—can be awarded to a project with matching corporate sponsor funds. According to NYSTAR regulations, corporate sponsorship is a prerequisite for funding. More information on matching fund guidelines is provided within the CAT application.

Application

Applications are reviewed on a regular basis.
