Digital vs. Analog Audio Signals Recording Media

Objective

Audio signals have been recorded for almost a hundred years. Edison first recorded audio signals on metal drums. From there we have traveled through phonograph records pressed out of vinyl, magnetic recording tape that doesn't have the same mechanical limitations of phonograph records (namely, they don't wear out as quickly) and finally to digital audio tape, compact disks (CDs), and MP3 media. The final three media are special not only for their use of different media, but for their method of storing music. All digital music is sampled and then stored as data in memory. When played back, digital music must be read from memory and then reassembled back into analog audio. Devotees of digital music feel that the re-assembly of the signal back to the original analog audio insures fidelity, while many purists find this to be its biggest drawback. The personal taste of the individual will always be the final judge.
