You
will investigate the characteristics of standing
waves produced by columns of air. Instruments such as woodwinds,
brasses, and pipe organs produce sounds from the vibrations
of standing waves in a column of air within a pipe or tube. In some
instruments, a vibrating reed or the vibrating lip of the player helps
set up vibrations in the air column. Unlike a string, in a column
of air, it is the air itself that is vibrating. The air within the
tube produces longitudinal
standing waves. Columns of air within tubes open at both ends (open
tube) or open at one end only (closed tube) can be used.
