Music and Columns of Air

Introduction

The sound of an vibrating object can be enhanced by causing an air column to vibrate. The varying lengths of the air columns are related to the pitch or frequency of the sound that is generated.

Playing an organ with varying pipe lengths shows that the high frequency or short wavelength sounds use the short pipes. On the other hand, the long pipes are used to generate the low frequency or long wavelength sounds. Other wind instruments use valves or slides to alter the length of the air columns.
