Music and Strings

Description

Attach a length of the lighter gauge steel piano wire between two supports. Place a disk magnet under the wire, and hold the pick-up coil above the wire. Both the magnet and pick-up coil should be as close as possible to the tensioned wire without actually making contact with the wire.

Pluck the "string" (actually wire) at a variety of places along the length of the wire. Were there any changes in the pitch of the sound produced?
Vary the tension on the string, and note the changes in pitch (if any) in the sound produced.
Touch the string with your finger at a variety of locations and note the changes in pitch as the string is plucked.
Change the position of the magnet and pick-up coil along the string, and note any changes in pitch.
Replace the steel piano wire with a length of the heavier gauge wire. Repeat the above steps, and note any differences displayed with the heavier gauge wire.
