Opening, saving and printing files
Portable document format files (.pdf)
The WebTech uses Adobe Acrobat PDF files as a means
to disseminate materials and information. To view
and print a PDF file, you will need to have the Acrobat
Reader software installed.
The Adobe Acrobat Reader
enables you to view, navigate, and print
PDF files on several platforms. Acrobat Reader is
available for free from all Adobe
online services (a non-government website).

Adobe Acrobat Reader
If your PDF file is displaying incorrectly,
try upgrading your version of Acrobat Reader
by downloading it from the Adobe website.
Opening a PDF
The PDF will open within a new browser
window once you've mouse-clicked on it's hyperlink.
Downloading and saving a PDF document
- Right-click on the PDF link .
- Select the 'Save Target As...'
in Internet Explorer or select 'Save Link
As...' in Netscape Navigator.
- Select 'Save' and note where
you have saved it.
- Use Acrobat Reader to open the file from your
harddrive.
Printing a PDF document
- Download and Save the PDF file to your computer
- Open it
- From the Acrobat Reader toolbar choose 'File'
> 'Print'
Note: Do not 'Print' our
PDFs from the right click option within MS Internet
Explorer web browser.
Use the Acrobat
Reader support knowledgebase to troubleshoot
any issues arising in the use of this software or
in displaying PDF's.

Microsoft Word files (.doc)
To download word documents so they can be edited:
- Right-click the link for the
item you want
- Select the 'Save Target As...'
in Internet Explorer or select 'Save Link
As...' in Netscape Navigator
- Select 'Save' (make sure you
note where you have saved it)
- Use Microsoft word to open and edit the file
Zipped files (.zip)
The WebTech uses zip files to decrease the file size
of materials that will be downloaded.
After downloading a .zip file, you will need a utility
such as WinZip to access the file's contents. This
shareware utility is available as an evaluation version
from http://www.winzip.com
Opening a zipped file
- Click on the hyperlink for the file
- You will be prompted to save the file ( note
where you have saved it)
- From the 'Download completed' dialogue box select
'Open'
- WinZip will open with the zipped file(s) displayed
- You can 'Open' the files from
within WinZip or select 'Extract'
to specify a particular location.

Plug-ins
Plug-ins are software programs that extend the capabilities
of your browser in a specific way eg. the ability
to play audio samples or view video movies from within
your browser.
Plug-ins that are used by the WebTech site are listed

Apple QuickTime Player
The Apple QuickTime plug-in lets you experience QuickTime
animation, music, MIDI, audio, video, and VR panoramas
directly in a Web page.

animation files called .swf's.

Upgrading your browser
To get the best experience out of the WebTech website
(and the Internet), it is recommended that your browser
version be 4 or later. The latest web browsers execute
javascripts, page formating and accessibility features
far more smoothly than earlier versions.
Click the hyperlink of the browser of your choice
and follow the instructions on that site.
