VARIABLE RESISTOR - This is an adjustable RESISTOR. They can normally be set to give anything from zero resistance to whatever is the maximum design value. Most have three pins so that they can also be used as a VOLTAGE DIVIDER.

VOLT (V) - A unit of electromotive force. It is the amount of force required to drive a steady current of one ampere through a resistance of one ohm. Electrical systems of most homes and office have 120 volts.
