THERMAL POLLUTION - Large inputs of heated water from a single plant or a number of plants using the same lake or slow-moving stream can have harmful effects on aquatic life. This is called Thermal Pollution.

THERMAL POLLUTION - A device used to measure temperature. It is composed of two metalic wires which produce a small voltage difference used for the determination of temperature.

THERMODYNAMICS - A study of the transformation of energy into other manifested forms and of their practical applications. The three laws of thermodynamics are:

  1. Law of Conservation of Energy - Energy may be transformed in an isolated system, but its total is constant.

  2. Heat cannot be changed directly into work at constant temperature by a cyclic process.

  3. Heat capacity and entropy of every crystalline solid becomes zero at absolute zero (0 degrees Kelvin).

TINNING - To coat with tin.

TRANFORMERS - Device for moving electrical energy from one alternating circuit to another.

TRANSISTOR - A transistor is a SOLID STATE switch and is cheaper than a RELAY. The current being controlled enters at the COLLECTOR, but will not go any further until the GATE opens, after which it leaves at the EMITTER. Many different types of transistors exist, including special types like PHOTOTRANSISTORS, but the most common are "NPN bi-polar" types. A transistor can amplify an output signal, often by several hundred times. This is called GAIN.

TURBINE GENERATOR - A device that uses steam, heated gases, water flow or wind to cause spinning motion that activates electromagnetic forces and generates electricity.
