Great Lakes Student Summit - May 13-14, 2004 in Buffalo, NY. Background information: The Great Lakes Student Summit
(GLSS), which began in 1995, is an environmental education program for
students in Grades 5-10 from throughout the Great Lakes States and Canada.
The program culminates into a 2-day event held in Buffalo, New York every
other year. The diversity of attendance has progressively increased at
each event During the 2003-2004 school years, it is expected that nearly 250 students will research and study the Great Lakes, perform field experiments, and participate in environmental education in their community. In May of 2004, at the 5th Biennial Great Lakes Student Summit, students will make formal presentations to their peers and leading Great Lakes scientists from throughout the basin. They will also partake in educational workshops, and participate in hands-on field trips. Lake Ontario Course Aboard the USEPA Lake Guardian (July 2003) This week-long course offered undergraduate students and teachers from NY an in-depth study of Lake Ontario and the research capabilities of the USEPA Lake Guardian. We worked with GLRC faculty to select students and teachers and GLRC faculty members assisted with presentations at various stops along Lake Ontario and on the St. Lawrence. (pictures) Botulism Workshop (April 2003) (Co-Sponsored by GLRC) Over 65 participants from the US and Canada shared research and monitoring results from the 2002 field season. Outcome - taken from the evaluations: Proceedings are being finalized. Lake Ontario Research Conference (March 2003) (Co-sponsored by GLRC) A Lake Ontario Research Workshop was held on March 13, 2003, at SUNY-ESF in Syracuse, NY. Co-organizers of the workshop were Joe Atkinson and Helen Domske (Great Lakes Program and New York Sea Grant), Mark Bain (Cornell University) and Jack Manno (Great Lakes Research Consortium). Proceedings are being published in two issues of the Great Lakes Research Review, with the first issue published as Vol. 7, No. 1 (Fall 2003), and the second issue scheduled for publication in spring 2004. Great Lakes Summer Institute (June 2002) In the summer of 2002, students participated in a short
course dealing with the Great Lakes.
