Freshman admission

The UB Engineering Office of Undergraduate Education works closely with the university’s Office of Admissions. Although all application materials are processed through the admissions office, we review the applications of undergraduate freshmen applying to any of our nine undergraduate engineering majors.

There is no separate application required for admission to UB Engineering. All you need to do is select engineering as your major on the standard application form. If you know which engineering major you want to pursue, you can indicate that choice. If you are undecided about the particular field within engineering you should just select “engineering.” If you decide on a major after you send in your application, just contact the admissions office with the news. You need not submit a new application. Enrolled students who remain in good standing can readily switch majors in their first or second years.

Admission criteria

Admission to the university is competitive. Admission decisions are based on a review of your high school academic performance, standardized test scores, and a supplemental application that will include your personal statement and letters of recommendation.

In addition, admission to UB Engineering may include as many as four other indicators. Depending on your school’s testing system (New York State Regents Exams or some other), these indicators include all math regents exam scores (A/B; I/II/III; or some combination), as well as your chemistry and physics Regents exam scores. Obviously, higher level math in your senior year (preferably calculus) is an important subject, but final grades typically are not available at the time of initial admissions decisions.

If your school does not require Regents exams your application is not penalized.
