Carl F. Kohrt
President and CEO, Battelle

Carl Kohrt is President and CEO of Battelle (see below), a position he began in October 2001.  He joined Battelle after a distinguished 29-year career at Kodak.  There he served in numerous senior executive, international, and technical positions - including Executive Vice President and Assistant Chief Operating Officer, Chief Technology Officer, Vice President and General Manager of the Health Sciences Division, Director of the Photographic R&D Laboratories, R&D Manager, Project Manager, and Research Scientist.

Kohrt was chosen for his great blend of science and technology, business, R&D management, and commercialization skills.  Board members felt that with his people-oriented management style, strong community commitment, and technical skills, he could help advance Battelle's agenda to be even more commercial and entrepreneurial.

Some of Kohrt's career accomplishments include:

  • The discovery or commercialization of entirely new color imaging systems, several of which still serve as the basis for current products in the marketplace.

  • A revamping of the intellectual property process that helped Kodak become the leading Fortune 500 company in terms of the number of U.S. patents issued per R&D dollar spent.

  • As Chief Technology Officer, the transformation of R&D from a functional organization to one aligned with specific market-oriented portfolios and the entry into digital and networked businesses.

  • Development and leadership of the Corporate Diversity Council to provide strategies and policies for increasing the representation of diverse constituencies to all regions and to all levels within the corporation.  This included service as the Corporate Champion for Women.

Kohrt received his B.S. in Chemistry from Furman University and Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Chicago.  He was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Chicago and received an M.M.S. in Management Science from the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
