B.S. Environmental Engineering, University at Buffalo, 2002
B.A. Psychology, University of California, Santa Cruz
The Environmental Engineering and Science (EES) program at the
University at Buffalo offers a healthy combination of basic civil and
environmental courses that have more than adequately prepared me for a
consulting career in the private sector. Soon after graduating in May
2002, I began working at the corporate headquarters of Stearns & Wheler
Environmental Engineers and Scientists in Cazenovia, NY
http://www.stearnswheler.com. Initially, I had assumed that I would be
given simple tasks such as communicating with equipment vendors, editing
O & M manuals, and updating project reports. Instead, I began my first
day developing system head curves for six new pump stations near New
York City. I have also designed open channels, flumes, and wet well
basins for these pump stations. Next month, I will begin working on a
project that entails the remediation of a brownfield located at a former
industrial site in the Syracuse metropolitan area.
The EES faculty are not only excellent scholars within their respective
disciplines, but are also excellent teachers. Theoretical methodology
is emphasized and this, coupled with the presentation of technological
applications needed for working in either a consulting firm or in a
government agency, provide the EES student with a superlative foundation
upon which to build a career and/or to continue on into graduate school.
