John E. Van Benschoten
is currently Associate Professor of
Civil, Structural, and Environmental Engineering at
the State University of New York at Buffalo . He joined the
Department of Civil, Structural, and Environmental Engineering in
1988 after receiving his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University
of Massachusetts. He has M.S. degrees from the University of Massachusetts
(1985, Civil Engineering) and the University of Vermont (1983, School
of Natural Resources), and a B.S. from Union College (1973, Industrial
Economics).
Dr. Van Benschoten's
teaching interests include physical and chemical phenomena for
water and wastewater treatment and process design. Courses taught
include aquatic chemistry, water quality design, physical/chemical
treatment processes, hydraulic engineering, and hazardous waste
management.
Recent research has
focused on the heterogeneous sorption of metals in the environment,
with applications to the transport of metals ions in groundwater
and remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater. Another
recent research interest is in the application of fractal geometry
concepts for the analysis of aquatic particles. Research also
has been conducted in the control of nonindigenous species using
chemical oxidants, removal of natural organic matter by coagulation
processes, aluminum chemistry in water treatment, oxidation of
iron and manganese, and beneficial use of water treatment residuals.
