Dean's Scholars Program
Overview
Each year, the University at Buffalo School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (UB Engineering) provides a special opportunity for approximately 20 highly talented incoming freshmen. Started in 2007, the Dean's Scholars Program is designed to recognize students for their outstanding high school records, demonstrated commitment to academic success, and interest in engineering. Through the program, incoming engineering students will receive individual academic advising, special seminars, and social activities that promote a sustaining interest in advanced education and research.
The Dean's Scholars Program will increase academic capacity, prepare students for the changing needs of a technological and diverse society and encourage them to become leaders in their field. Additionally, the program will allow UB Engineering to strategically grow its student population while admitting students of exceptional ability. It will also add to our efforts in attracting the kind of faculty and students that are essential to the vitality and excellence of the institution at a time when recruiting and retaining the best and brightest is highly competitive and many engineering schools are expanding their programs.
Program Highlights
Through the Dean's Scholars Program, a small group of highly motivated undergraduates are introduced to hands-on academic activities and interests. In addition to receiving financial support, Dean's Scholars attend faculty presentations, visit industry representatives (Tour of the GM PowerTrain Facility), participate in informal networking (Tour of the Buffalo Waterfront and Football Tailgate), and are advised by senior faculty.
- Dean's Scholars will receive a $3,000 scholarship each academic year for up to four years, provided that they demonstrate acceptable academic performance including a minimum 3.0 GPA.
- The Dean's Scholarship may be combined with all other need- and merit-based funding that a student receives from elsewhere in the university.
- During the freshman year, students will be advised and mentored by the Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences
- Chosen applicants will have earned SAT scores of approximately 1450.
- Students are invited to serve as informal amabassadors to the school and may participate in student recruitment and fund-raising activities.
Program Objective
Our goal is for Dean's Scholars to reach their full potential and to make a difference in their communities, their disciplines, and beyond. These young scholars will enjoy access to all the resources of UB Engineering while receiving mentoring and counseling from the school's most accomplished senior faculty.
Through the Dean's Scholarship Program, UB Engineering:
- Supports some of the school's most promising students in their academic and intellectual lives.
- Facilitates informal intellectual discussions and activities outside of classes.
- Promotes the engineering community by bringing together highly talented students with similar aptitudes and interests.
UB Engineering is committed to fostering innovations in education and advances in research. Through interdisciplinary learning opportunities and hands-on experiences, we are preparing our students for tomorrow's global economy.
