In its 5th year, BEAM TREK , has become known as an educational adventure creating awareness and interest in engineering. Teams of high school students compete against one another as they are challenged by University @ Buffalo (UB) faculty to prove their scientific and mathematical mettle in a brain-teasing race around the campus. Each year, BEAM TREK has a NEW theme and this year it is “Energize” with a focus on alternative energy sources and energy efficiency.
Not knowing what to expect, teams found themselves having to complete various engineering tasks where they earn points, learnt how engineering can help improve the world in the next century, and obtain clues as to where their next task lies. The adventure’s climax was a head to head competition between the highest scoring teams in a final task. All this added to the fun with one team earning the distinction of being “Buffalo’s Best Engineering Team of the Future”.
BEAM TREK 2012 helps to teach students the value of planning, listening, and teamwork. The overall themes of diversity and alternative energy technology complement each other helping to create a better and greener future.
BEAM TREK 2012 was a whole day event held entirely at the UB Amherst campus. Students, parents, UB faculty, sponsors and volunteers had the opportunity to network throughout the day.
