CONSTITUTION
S. U. N. Y. AT BUFFALO STUDENT CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR ENGINEERING EDUCATION
 
Preamble

The S.U.N.Y. at Buffalo Student Chapter of the American Society for Engineering Education (hereafter known as UB-ASEE) is a student-based organization committed to furthering education in engineering. The mission shall be accomplished by providing services to prepare members for a career in academia, educating undergraduate students about graduate education, and encouraging underrepresented groups in academia and graduate school.

 

Article I - Purpose

UB-ASEE shall focus its efforts toward two main groups: graduate and prospective graduate (undergraduate) engineering students at UB.

 

    1. To encourage students to consider academic careers,
    2. To assist students in their search for academic positions,
    3. To enhance the teaching and presentation skills of prospective educators,
    4. To develop the skills needed to establish and lead a research program.
 
    1. To dispel common misperceptions and to inform students about the options and potential benefits of attending graduate school,
    2. To educate students on the availability of financial assistance.
  Additionally, for both groups considered, the purpose of UB-ASEE will be to encourage participation by the underrepresented groups through focused recruitment efforts.

 

Article II - Membership

Section 1: Membership and participation shall be free from discrimination based on race, religion, ethnic group, national origin, handicap, or sex.

Section 2: Student membership shall be open to all graduate and undergraduate students of S.U.N.Y. at Buffalo with primary emphasis on graduate students in engineering.

Section 3: All members are encouraged to join ASEE as student members and officers are required to be members of ASEE.

 

Article III - Officers

Section 1: The offices of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Public Relations, and Treasurer shall be members of the Executive Board.

Section 2: The term of office for each officer shall be one full year in time commencing on the day of election.

Section 3: The Executive Board members shall be elected in a majority vote by the members attending the election meeting held each year in September.

Section 4: The Advisor shall be an ASEE member in good standing and shall have an indefinite term in office.

Section 5: The Advisor and officer shall resign on written notification to the Secretary and/or President.

 

Article IV - Duties of the Executive Board

Section 1: The President's duties will include:

 

  1. Formulating a yearly overview for the organization, such as a list of planned activities and events. Goals and priorities will be determined.
  2. Insuring that all activities fall within the organizational goals as stated in the Constitution.
  3. Presiding over all regular and special meetings for the organization.
  4. Insuring that all activities and other organizational functions are properly managed under the guidelines of the Constitution and bylaws, and the policies of S.U.N.Y. at Buffalo.
  5. Creating committees as needed.
 

Section 2: The Vice-President's duties will include:

 

  1. Assisting the President in insuring that all objectives are met.
  2. Assuming the duties of the President in her/his absence.
  3. Aid in preparing an annual report to inform the parent organization and the student members on the accomplishments and future planned activities.
 

Section 3: The Secretary's duties will include:

 

  1. Maintaining written correspondence with on-campus and off-campus organizations as needed.
  2. Recording events and activities performed by the organization.
  3. Aid in preparing an annual report to inform the parent organization and the student members on the accomplishments and future planned activities.
  4. Keeping minutes during meetings and to document a record of the minutes for the student chapter.
  5. Keeping records of all student members.
 

Section 4: The Public Relations Officer's duties will include:

 

  1. Maintaining and updating the UB-ASEE web page as needed.
  2. Maintaining contact with undergraduate and graduate organizations and to inform them of seminars and activities that may be beneficial to them.
  3. E-mail notifications and other advertising as needed for seminars and activities.
  4. Distributing the annual report to members.
 

Section 5: The Treasurer's duties will include:

 

  1. Compiling and presenting a financial report of the previous year.
  2. Setting up a budget for the upcoming year.
  3. Overseeing fund-raising activities.
  4. Keeping a record of the student chapter funds and making expenditures in a legal manner.
  5. Maintaining a record of membership and collecting dues.
 

 

Article V - Amendments and Bylaws

 

AMENDMENTS

 

Section 1: All amendments are to be submitted in writing to the President and Secretary and them read at a meeting. The amendment can be voted on in the same meeting.

 

Section 2: Amendments shall be made by a 2/3-majority vote by the members present.

 

 

BYLAWS

 

Section 1: Elections shall be conducted by a show of hands. Absentee ballots shall not be allowed.

 

Section 2: The Vice-President shall fill a vacancy of the Presidency. Other vacancies on the Executive Board shall be filled by a majority election by the remaining members of the Executive Board. In the case of a tie, the Advisor shall cast the deciding vote.

 

Section 3: UB-ASEE general meetings shall be held at least once per month. Executive Board meetings shall be held as necessary.

 

Section 4: A Senator and alternate-Senator shall be elected during the officer elections but are not members of the Executive Board. Their duties are to attend the scheduled Graduate Student Association meetings, as required, and report to the Executive Board.

 

Section 5: The Executive Board shall appoint an undergraduate student with the title Undergraduate Liaison. The duty of the Undergraduate Liaison is to communicate the needs of the undergraduate engineering population at-large to the Executive Board.
