Class II test problems are simplified examples of engineering test problems. They include analysis codes for more than one engineering discipline and have solutions which have a physical interpretation. In many cases, these problems have multiple solutions which are essentially equivalent (if manufacturing tolerances and measurement accuracy is considered). Class II test problems have a small number of design variables and constraints and are computationally inexpensive. This distinguishing them from Class III engineering design problems which have a large number of design variables and constraints and are computationally expensive. Thus, Class II problems are useful for demonstrating MDO concepts and for testing and comparing MDO methods.
