Class I test problems have simple analysis, analytic derivatives and known solutions. In many cases, these problems have conventional solution methods which are more efficient than the MDO solution methods. The problems have been manufactured to simulate the characteristics observed in practical engineering design problems. However, Class I test problems are computationally inexpensive while engineering design problems are computationally expensive. Thus, Class I problems are useful for testing and evaluating new MDO methods.
