Practices in Ecosystem Restoration (GEO 504)

Instructors:
Sean J. Bennett

Last Offered:
Spring 2010

Summary:
The practices and approaches used to restore ecologically or environmentally impaired landscapes and waterbodies are varied, spanning many disciplines and approaches.  The tools and technologies used by engineers to remediate environmental problems may be markedly different from those used by politicians or watershed managers posed with the same issues.  This new course will examine the three primary practices used in the design and execution of restoration programs (also highlighted in the research section): (1) assessment, which involves the quantification and extent of the impairment, (2) modeling, which seeks to parameterize and predict the current and future state of the impairment, and (3) management, which seeks to resolve the impairment and restore or rehabilitate the landscape.  The tools, technologies, and protocols used in restoration projects will be presented and discussed, as well as post-project evaluation and monitoring and interdisciplinary approaches.
