The Baldy Hall Distance Learning Classroom is a unique facility which offers a variety of distance learning technologies:

A Western New York fiber optic broadband network enables us to connect simultaneously with up to 3 other sites in WNY, with continuous presence and full interactivity.

Video conferencing over digital phone lines (ISDN) enables global connectivity.

Video conferencing over the Internet (using the H.323 protocol) enables global connectivity.

Limited video production capabilites for taping presentations or lectures that can be duplicated and shipped anywhere.

Satellite downlinks can be viewed here; fax, telephone and e-mail are available for communicating questions and comments.

The Baldy Hall room is well equipped for recording your class or presentation or transmitting the class or presentation live to students at distant sites.

Recording for presentation-style replay or for streaming on the web can be effected by using either of:

  • Windows Media
  • Real Media
  • Accordent Capture Station.
  • DVD

Display equipment includes:

  • Four 27-inch ceiling mounted monitors face the instructor for keeping track of programming and distant sites.
  • Four 32-inch monitors and a 7-foot projection screen serve the students in the classroom.
  • Two 27-inch ceiling mounted monitors serve students who are further from the projection screen.
  • An Epson Projector that is capable of image projection at resolutions up to 1024 x 768 pixels.

    - Remote sites
    - Cable television
    - Satellite links
    - Videotape

Dell PC (Windows XP) with floppy drive, Zip drive, and DVD-ROM

Software includes:

  • Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Access)
  • PuTTY, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Exceed
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • Various media players and peripherals.

Additional software can be installed upon request.

Macintosh (OS 10.4) with DVD-ROM

Software includes:

  • Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel)
  • Keynote, Internet Explorer, Safari,Firefox
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • Various other media players and peripherals

Additional software can be installed upon request.

Smart Sympodium with stylus - for writing/annotating on the computer screen.
Notes written on the Sympodium can be saved as pdf files for distribution.
Annotations over PowerPoint can also be saved.

WolfVision Visualizer
Displays plain-paper overheads, book pages, 3-D objects, or your notes as you write.
We do not recommend using standard transparencies on the Visualizer.

A combination DVD/VHS Player

There are limited video production capabilities using a Panasonic MX-50 video switcher and mastering on DVD.

The room is equipped with two stationary Sony BRC cameras to capture the instructor and the students.

There are 24 voice activated student microphones, each one shared by two students.
The instructor uses a clip-on lavaliere, or wireless microphone.

Equipment available for conferencing

Polycom system:

  • ISDN video conferencing (H.320 protocol)
  • Capable of connections up to 2Mbps.
  • IP videoconferening (H.323 protocol) Capable of connections up to 2Mbps.

Telephone Conferencing Enabled

Satellite Downlink Viewing
Satellite programs can be viewed in the classroom via the campus cable system.

The Distance Learning rooms are available to the faculty, staff and students of the University as well as members of the community.
