The University at Buffalo School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) is committed to delivering distance education graduate course offerings without boundaries to students throughout the world. We call our system EngiNet - an acronym for 'engineering network.' This system was initially developed to provide New York State industry with state-of-the-art engineering instruction and has since grown to reach individual graduate students throughout the world.
Presently, courses are distributed by sharing recorded lectures with students. Homework and tests are administered so that class materials are paced throughout the semester. Finished assignments are returned by students via mail, fax, or professor directly or to the EngiNet office if the professor specifies.
All EngiNet instructors are well-versed in the special needs of distant students. Professors accommodate those needs through personal interaction via telephone, fax and e-mail.
SEAS currently offers degree programs in Aerospace, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, and Mechanical Engineering. Program details can be researched through the individual departments.
EngiNet courses are delivered streamed over the web or in CD format. A student can take the class whenever he or she finds it convenient to load the recording into a computer or access the web. Individual communication times between the student and professor are arranged according to mutually beneficial schedules. On occasion, distant students utilize videoconferencing technology to join host-site students for presentations and discourse. Individual accommodations and scheduling are required for this on a case-by-case basis.
In addition to regular distance education courses, EngiNet classrooms have also been used for academic and corporate meetings, dissertation defenses and production of student support material (in cooperation with DEVO - Distance Education and Videoconferencing Operations). EngiNet is part of the Sprint Videoconferencing Network, which provides national and international links through Kinko's and other easily accessed sites. Check the links to Baldy or Bell for details, rates and technical information.
