What is EngiNet™ and how does it work?

EngiNet™ is the statewide SUNY engineering distance education program. It provides busy engineering professionals with access to graduate level courses.

Courses are taught by University at Buffalo faculty, and provide advanced technical and engineering knowledge and convenient, user-friendly access to educational enhancement. It was created to enhance the graduate engineering program by providing instruction to off campus students as well as companies and institutions.

The program runs approximately one week behind regularly scheduled classes to allow for delivery of media. Every week, students will receive a recorded version of each lecture in the courses they are taking in CD format, along with any class notes and/or homework. EngiNet™ offers greater opportunities for students to take courses not available in their geographical area, and offers professional development for engineers whose job or family responsibilities have prevented them from pursuing conventional degree programs.

Do I have to be admitted to the Graduate School to take an EngiNet™ course?

No. If you are not pursuing a degree from UB, you may take up to 12 credit hours via EngiNet™ courses, providing you maintain the 3.0 standard for all graduate work.

If you wish for your coursework to be counted toward a degree, then within the first 6 hours of coursework you should make application to the grad school and be officially admitted to a specific department's program. It is suggested that you begin that process as soon as possible. You will be check stopped from any further registrations if you have not been accepted by the grad program in the department of your choice by the end of the fourth course taken, or 12th credit hour. Any coursework taken beyond the first 6 hrs may not be counted toward your degree, so check with your department's policy, if successful application/admittance has not occurred.

How long do I have to complete my graduate degree program?

The time limit for a degree is 4 years (excluding approved leaves of absence) from the time of your first graduate registration. Should more time be necessary you may apply for an extension of time limit, which requires departmental approval and which is normally granted for a period of one year or less. Student requests for extension of time limits must be justified using a graduate petition form found at www.grad.buffalo.edu. If you are not enrolled in consecutive semesters, you should file a formal leave-of-absence prior to the start of the semester. Continued leaves of absence beyond two years will not be granted. Any questions regarding these policies should be directed to departmental graduate secretaries.

You must make application to our graduate program officially through the department of your choice for your credit hours to count toward a degree. Your approval for admission must occur within the first 6-12 credit hours of your work. You will be check stopped from any further registrations after completing your fourth course if your application has not been received and/or approved. University policy will allow you to take only 12 credit hours without matriculating into a degree program. Our office does not make any admissions decisions or recommendations. Normal departmental criteria apply. Please contact the graduate secretary in the department of your choice.

You will submit the name of someone for proctorship and they will be subject to approval by your professor. The exam will be mailed to the proctor, who will then be responsible for administering the exam as per the professor's instructions, and mailing the exam back to the professor. The professors may elect to administer the exams themselves. Contact the professor for details.
