Student Computing Access

All registered EngiNet™students are eligible for access to the campus libraries and computer labs at UB, and are each provided with a personal computer account on the UBUnix system. Both students who do and do not live within driving distance of the University may wish to take advantage of this access. Many resources from the University’s Undergraduate Library and Science and Engineering Library are available online or through interlibrary loans, and the UBUnix accounts can be accessed remotely. The procedures for activating computer accounts and remotely accessing computer accounts are outlined below.

Activating Computer Accounts
Once a student is registered, his/her UBUnix account is automatically set up. In order to activate this account there are two options:

1. A student can go in person, with his/her UB Card, to one of the terminals set up next to the help desks in the computer labs in the Computing Center, Capen Hall, Bell Hall, Fronczak Hall and Lockwood Library. Directions for activating an account by swiping the UB Card at one of these terminals are written at each terminal. Once the card is swiped, the computer will lead the student through the process of logging in to his/her account and changing his/her initial password.

2. A student can fax a photocopy of a valid picture ID, such as a driver’s license or a passport, as well as a home phone number to the Computing Center, FAX: 716-645-3617, attention Jody Latvis, requesting his/her user name and initial password. Jody would then telephone the student with his/her requested information. The account would then be activated and the student could log in both on-campus and from a remote location.
