Prof. Bird's research on nanoelectronics focuses on understanding novel quantum phenomena that arise in nanostructured devices - such as semiconductor nanocontacts and quantum dots, carbon nanotubes and nanowires - and on exploring the applications of such devices to future technology.
The image shows a 30-nanometer wide nickel silicide nanowire that has been contacted with four nanoscale electrodes to allow measurement of its electrical properties. Recent work has shown novel giant magneto-resistance effects in these devices.
