Catalogue Description
|
An introduction to environmental engineering systems
and infrastructure is presented. Fundamentals covered include the
application of mass and energy balances and equilibrium chemistry to
environmental systems. These concepts are applied to a number
of important environmental topics including risk assessment,
modeling of water quality systems, water and wastewater treatment
facilities, air quality modeling, and municipal and hazardous solid
waste management. (Spring)

Course Objectives/Outcomes
|
Consistent
with the mission and vision of the Department, the objectives of
Introduction to Environmental Engineering class are to:
- Provide
students with a broad general education that fosters an
understanding of the impact of environmental engineering
solutions in a global and societal context.
- Knowledge
of introductory fundamentals in the following focus areas: water
supply and resources, environmental systems modeling,
environmental chemistry, wastewater management, solid waste
management, hazardous waste management, atmospheric systems and
air pollution control, and environmental and occupational health
- Provide
students with a hands-on laboratory experience in developing
testing programs to answer environmental design and management
questions.
- Develop
independent thinking and effective implementation skills that
will be needed to execute job related tasks.
- Provide
opportunities for students to develop skills and confidence in
preparing and delivering high quality written and oral
presentations based on sound engineering principles.
