Civil Engineering Graduate Student Clubs and Professional Societies Funded by the University Graduate Student Association, the Civil Engineering Graduate Student Association (GSA) provides a framework for graduate student activities. This includes informational meetings, social gatherings, and student-faculty mixers. Also, elected officers represent the graduate students at both the Departmental and University levels. All graduate students are invited to participate. Professional
societies and associations The Graduate
Student Association (GSA) is supported by student fees and is open to
all CSEE graduate students. There are two clubs at UB specifically for
students interested in a career in environmental engineering or science.
These are the Water Environment Federation (WEF) Student Chapter and the
Air and Waste Management Association (AWMA) Student Club, both advised
by Dr. Weber. The Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) student
chapter is for those interested in earthquake engineering. Dr. Reinhorn
is the advisor. These organizations have regular meetings throughout the
year. There is an active chapter of ASCE, Society of Women Engineers,
etc. and both Chi Epsilon and Tau Beta Pi meet regularly. Centers The Department houses several research centers and agencies, which provide students and faculty with additional opportunities for involvement with projects and other faculty, both at UB and outside UB. Many of the faculty in the Department are active participants in these centers. The Center for Integrated Waste Management is directed by Dr. Scott Weber, in 207 Jarvis Hall. The Great Lakes Program is directed by Dr. Joseph Atkinson (202 Jarvis), with Associate Director Helen Domske, who also serves as education specialist for the local New York Sea Grant extension office, located in 204 Jarvis Hall. The Multidisciplinary
Center for Earthquake Engineering Research is a national center for
advanced, innovative systems in earthquake engineering. The Center is
directed by Prof. G. C. Lee, Director, and by Prof. Michel Bruneau, Deputy
Director. The headquarters of the Center are located at Red Jacket Quadrangle
in the Ellicott Complex. The Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental
Engineering is the flag institution of the National Center. The department
houses the Structural Engineering and Earthquake Simulator Laboratory
directed by Prof. M. C. Constantinou and Prof. A. M. Reinhorn. The laboratory
includes the shaking table for earthquake simulations. Further information
may be obtained from their web site, http://mceer.buffalo.edu. Degree Conferral Timetable for Receipt of Paperwork
