SEAS Dean’s Award, 2011
Scott D. Stevens, PE
Scott Stevens

Each year the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences gives its highest honor, the Dean's Award for Achievement, to someone who has made a substantial contribution to the practice of engineering or the applied sciences and/or has had an exceptional professional career. This year UB Engineering is pleased to honor Scott D. Stevens (BS CIE '79), PE. Stevens is founder and CEO of Dimension Fabricators, Inc. (Glenville, NY), a manufacturer of concrete reinforcing steel products for complex construction projects.

Scott Stevens' career began as a facilities engineer for the space shuttle program at Lockheed Martin. In 1984, he founded Dimension Fabricators, Inc. Under his direction, the company has grown immensely from its start-up beginnings, to become highly regarded for its fabrication and delivery solutions on grand-scale, challenging concrete reinforcing projects. Dimension has produced parts and assemblies for many of the northeastern United States' sizable highway bridges and buildings, including the Boston Central Artery (Mass.), the U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters (Washington, D.C.), and the Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge (New Haven, Conn.). Its current projects include the University at Albany's new School of Business, and the Gilboa Dam reconstruction (both in New York). Dimension has fabricated and trucked materials as large as 125 feet long and weighing 48 tons, all on company trucks.

In 2010, to accommodate twelve years of steady growth, the company purchased the former Super Steel Schenectady plant in Glenville, N.Y., and relocated there, further supporting the region's economy and future. The new plant encompasses 160,000 square feet or nearly four acres, under one roof. It now has over a dozen overhead cranes of up to 150-ton capacity, and rail lines totaling 3,000 feet. The company now employs 60 people.

Stevens, a licensed professional engineer and a director on the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute's board, is a UB Engineering Dean's Advisory Council member, where he has served since 2005. Stevens has been on the First National Bank of Scotia's board of directors for three years. He has volunteered as a consultant to high school economics classes for junior achievement for fifteen years, and as a pilot for Angel Flight, a charitable organization that transports patients via private aircraft. Stevens was the 2010 recipient of the School of Engineering's Engineer of the Year Award, presented annually by the UB Engineering Alumni Association, for an alumnus or closely affiliated person with distinguishing activities in alumni, business, community, and professional affairs.

Giving back is important to Scott and his wife, Coleen (UB Physical Therapy '79). They have faithfully supported UB Engineering, including a generous gift to the School's new building, Barbara and Jack Davis Hall, where the courtyard will be named in their honor. They are also benefactors to other UB programs including athletics; the libraries; and the School of Public Health and Health Professions.

Scott and Coleen have three sons, Gregory, Todd, and Daniel, all of whom have pursued the study of civil engineering.

The University at Buffalo School of Engineering is honored to name Scott Stevens as an alumnus of great distinction whose contiued career achievements merit our highest regard.
