Engineering analysis is a two stage process. In the first stage we go from a
physical system to a mathematical model (Equations of equilibrium
,
stress-strain relationships 
etc.)
followed by an approximate numerical solution of the mathematical model.
The finite element method is a simple, robust and efficient method of
obtaining a numerical approximate solution for a given mathematical model
of a structure.
